The Girl Scouts STEM Center for Excellence’s mission is to inspire girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math, which we all know as STEM. As one of the top general contractors in the country, we are proud to support their mission. To help the Girl Scouts of Hawaii realize their dreams, Hensel Phelps provided construction management services for this project as pro bono, including preconstruction and construction. We also included construction labor and materials.

Kaanapali Beach Hotel Renovation Phase 1
Swinerton Builders

Phase 1 of Ka’anapali Beach Hotel’s $56-million renovation included the construction of a 10,000-square-foot restaurant from the ground-up; a full renovation of two guestroom wings totaling 264 guestrooms; parking garage upgrades; major infrastructure improvements; and landscape site upgrades. Construction began amidst the breakthrough of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020 and opened to the public in Fall 2021.

Hawaii State Hospital New Patient Facility

The Hawaii State Hospital New Patient Facility was a design-build collaboration between multiple design firms, design-build trade partners, and Hensel Phelps working for the Hawaii State Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) and the Department of Health. This partnership resulted in innovation in project delivery, design, and construction. This project is a testament to Design-Build Done Right, with the entire team working collaboratively in the best interests of the project, exceeding RFP requirements and owner’s satisfaction.

Pile Driving for Wai Kai Waterfront Recreational Facility at Hoakalei
Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc

Healy Tibbitts successfully installed in-water driven concrete piles for the Wai Kai Waterfront Recreational Facility at Hoakalei project. The precisely driven piles provided foundation support for the new retaining walls and waterfront boardwalk. Healy Tibbitts overcame several challenges to provide prime contractor Layton Construction the pile support to safely and efficiently install its over-the-water concrete structures and architectural features.

Emergency Repairs at Waialua Beach Road (#605) Over Kiikii St
Sea Engineering, Inc.

Sea Engineering, Inc. provided the City and County of Honolulu with emergency construction repairs on the Waialua Beach Road Bridge after catastrophic flooding in March of 2021 closed the bridge. SEI crews completed underwater repairs to the bridge, including structural concrete repairs to the abutment and scour critical repairs at the piers to allow CCH to reopen the bridge, one of only two main throughfares for the city of Waialua.

Ala Wai Canal Dredging and Improvements - Dredging Work, Oahu
Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc.

Healy Tibbitts successfully dredged and disposed of over 170,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Ala Wai Canal from the Waikiki-Kapahulu Library end to the Ala Moana Boulevard bridge. This increased the canal depth from 1 to 2 feet to 8 to 10 feet. Healy Tibbitts’ innovation overcame many challenges to provide the Waikiki regional area with a significantly improved storm water management system that will mitigate future flooding events.

Lanakila Public Housing
Koga Engineering & Construction, Inc.

This Koga Engineering & Construction, Inc. (Koga) project successfully encapsulated soils contaminated with lead, mercury, arsenic, and chlordane at Lanakila’s Public Housing to prevent the hazardous chemicals from spreading into the neighboring homes and St. Joseph Elementary and High School. The completion of this project provided the community with a grassy recreation area that can also be utilized in the future for affordable housing development.

F-22 Fighter Alert Facility at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam
Nordic PCL Construction, Inc.

The F-22 Fighter Alert Facility is a high security design-bid-build project that would help to ensure air defense readiness in the airspace around Hawaii. It is a fully designed aircraft shelter that includes a parking apron, taxiway for thirteen F-22 aircrafts, aircraft Hush House foundation, slab and an augmenter, Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement slab, new Crew Quarters, Sentry Aloha, and Entry Control Point buildings. Additional security fences and active vehicle barrier (AVB) gates were installed to secure the new parking lot and airfield for the F-22 aircraft.

Kapaa Stream Bridge
Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.

Hawaiian Dredging completed the new Kapaa Stream Bridge. The longer and wider single span bridge replaced the existing two-span bridge to meet current structural and seismic safety standards. This bridge serves as the main connection to the East and Northshore communities of Kauai. The intersection of Kuhio Highway and Mailihuna Road was also upgraded to become Kauai’s first major roundabout to ensure the safety of motorist, cyclist, and pedestrians.

Ala Moana Wastewater Pump Station Improvements
Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.

Hawaiian Dredging completed upgrades to the Ala Moana Wastewater Pump Station to improve the pumping reliability and lower the risk of wastewater spills affecting the City and County of Honolulu.  The Ala Moana Wastewater Pump is the largest pump station on Oahu and is responsible for pumping the wastewater for the greater Honolulu area. While allowing the station to continuously operate, Hawaiian Dredging completed the upgrades and ensured that the community and environment remained safe.

Kanapuu Drive Emergency Culvert Repairs
Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.

As a subcontractor, Hawaiian Dredging was able to assist General Contractor, Integrated Construction, Inc. by performing the stabilization, shoring and excavation of the road to extract a damaged 12 foot diameter corrugated metal storm drain pipe and replace it with a new concrete box culvert and HDPE transition pipe. This critical infrastructure work was essential to safely restore the road and protect nearby homes from ground settlement.

The restoration of heavily-damaged Building 97 at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum was a labor of love for those who wish to see a crucial part of our history preserved, renewed with a mission to educate today’s youth in STEM fields. The Ralph S. Inouye team worked closely with the owner and historic architect to preserve as much of the original building as possible and  overcame logistical and construction technology-related challenges for a successful completion.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai Guestroom Renovations

Renovating a resort can be a challenging process that requires significant investment and time. As the general contractor, Hensel Phelps focused on one goal — to deliver a renovated resort that meets the vision of the owners, MSD Capital and Hualalai Investors and the Four Seasons Resort. Hensel Phelps completed the renovation of 227 guestrooms and the new construction of a two-story bungalow in less than a year of accelerated schedule.

The Element
Moss & Assoiates, LLC

The Element—located in Ewa Beach, Oahu, Hawaii—is the focal point of the Ho‘opili master-planned community and was developed by Alaka‘i Development, designed by KTGY Group, and built by Moss & Associates, LLC. The Element features 318 ultra-modern apartments within 13, three-story buildings, accompanied by the clubhouse, and two support buildings. The Element’s resort style amenities include a two-story fitness center, luxe pool with cabanas, a restaurant, retail space, and a 600-space parking garage.

Island Palms Community - Energy Savings Performance
Dorvin D. Leis Co., Inc.

Island Palms Community phase 1 upgrade and installation of condenser water heat pump HVAC systems for 3,312 homes consisting of various designs and floor plans. This logistic intensive, three-year project focused on upgrading the HVAC systems providing energy efficiency to multi-residential properties located on several military bases.

Hensel Phelps constructed a new state-of-the-art $44 million clinic, as part of Kaiser Permanente’s Hawaii Regional Capital Projects Program. The 41,154-square-foot building features 29 office provider spaces, 32 exam rooms, observation rooms, imaging rooms, conference rooms, office space, staff lockers, a lounge, and waiting rooms. It offers primary care, mental health services, imaging, lab, pharmacy, women’s health, and prevention and wellness programs.  The building received the U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold Certification.

The Innovate, Discover, Explore and Achieve — IDEA — Center at Noelani Elementary school ushers the campus into 21st century problem-based learning. A learning commons and makerspace, it replaces the outdated library with new educational technology and updated life safety features. As one of the DOE’s first HI-CHPS facilities, it’s a living laboratory for sustainability and green building principles.  Ralph S. Inouye Co. navigated administrative challenges and a complex structural design to bring it to life.

The $351.1 million Mauka Extension project for the Hawaii Department of Transportation - Airports Division is a modernized terminal facility at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL). The 270,242-square-foot extension provides additional TSA checkpoints, aircraft gates, passenger hold rooms, security screening lanes, jet bridges, and public amenities, such as concessions, restrooms, and information kiosks. It features six gates, each with two passenger loading bridges for a flexible capacity of six widebody aircraft or 11 narrow-body aircraft.
